A popular anti-impotence drug, Viagra, has been linked to potentially fatal heart attacks and strokes in men taking the anti-impotence drug sildenafil.
The drug was discovered in 1997 after a study on male volunteers exposed to the drug found that men taking it had a 40 per cent higher risk of having an erectile dysfunction.
The drug is a type of medication called a PDE5 inhibitor. When this medication is taken too rapidly, it can cause erections and even death, researchers believe.
The findings were announced on the New York State Department of Public Health’s Web site on Friday.
“There are now many studies done to look for new ways to reduce the chances of erectile dysfunction,” said Dr. Ian Read, a urologist with the New York State Psychiatric Institute.
“But what is known now is that it is extremely rare for erection problems to occur in a man taking sildenafil, and there have been very few cases of fatal or life-threatening events.”
Sildenafil was the first of many medicines approved for treating erectile dysfunction in men in the 1990s. However, it is not a PDE5 inhibitor and is not commonly used as an aphrodisiac.
